This type of family therapy provides strategies and techniques to improve family communication and the family environment. These strategies and techniques can be used in different family environments and different situations.

It may require that some family members be diagnosed with a mental health disorder in order to begin family therapy. Family therapy can also take place within gay families where family members have been traditionally less involved and supportive of the gay child’s development. In this way family therapy can serve all family members in a way that other programs cannot.
